New fuel cell heating devices with a longer lifespan and longer maintenance intervals

Highly efficient technology with all-round enhanced performance – the Vitovalor PT2 and Vitovalor PA2 are new fuel cell heating devices for supplying heat and electric power to single- and two-family homes. They are now laid out for a lifespan of at least 80,000 hours of operation and their fuel cell only needs maintenance every five years. Thus Viessmann’s is making use of the high reliability of the new PEM fuel cell. Apart from the substantially longer service life of the devices, homeowners also profit from lower service costs.

Compact fuel cell device with a choice of four different peak load boilers

Vitovalor PT2 is a compact fuel cell device consisting of two modules: the basic unit with an integrated PEM fuel cell, gas condensing peak load boiler and control, as well as a storage tower with a DHW cylinder (220 liters) and a complete hydraulic system. The two modules are now both 1.8 meters high, as well, thereby giving the new design a more appealing look.

The new fuel cell heating device has a gas condensing boiler with rated outputs of 11.4 to 30.8 kilowatts in order to meet required peak capacities. This enables the device to be used in houses with greater heating loads, such as two-family homes and existing buildings.

Backup solution for already modernized systems

There is also the Vitovalor PA2, a fuel cell module for upgrading systems, such as those that already have a modern gas condensing boiler. The PEM fuel cell, gas processing and control units are integrated in a compact casing 1.6 meters in height.

More independent by generating your own electricity

The fuel cell in both the Vitovalor PT2 and the Vitovalor PA2 has an electrical output of 750 watts, can run for up to 45 hours straight, and generates up to 18 kilowatt-hours of electricity a day when in constant operation. This enables the average household to cover the greater portion of its daily requirement itself, thus making it more independent of the public power grid and rising electricity prices.

Compared to buying electricity from the grid, fuel cell heating devices reduce energy costs by up to forty percent and cut CO2 emissions nearly in half. This is why the two new devices have been given the A++ label, the highest efficiency classification according to the European Energy Efficiency Directive.

Control using a large color touch display and an integrated WLAN interface

The new seven-inch, intuitive color touch display makes these fuel cell heating devices very easy to use. Messages displayed in plain text dialog facilitate readings and adjustments. The color touch display functions as an energy cockpit that provides easy-to-understand information on such things as gas consumption and electricity production. This enables operators to have a constant overview of their fuel cell heating system’s yield and consumption figures, and to change the settings when necessary.

These fuel cell heating devices have an integrated WLAN interface as a standard feature and are therefore well prepared for remote control by smartphone. It is also possible to make use of digital service offers from heating system specialists if desired. For instance, a specialist could use the Vitoguide software tool to monitor the system, identify potential problems early on and take preventive action.

Homeowners who do not wish to use the internet to communicate with their fuel cell heating devices have the option of monitoring and controlling their device by way of a data bus and the Vitotrol 300-C remote control (available starting August 2018).

Subsidies in record amounts

Installing a Vitovalor PT2 fuel cell heating device is subsidized by the KfW (German Development Bank) in the amount of 9,300 euros. Anyone who would also like to be paid the lump sum for combined heat and power generation in accordance with the German Combined Heat and Power Generation Act will receive an additional 1,800 euros – making 11,100 euros altogether.

Those who are building a new house and would like to take advantage of a low-interest loan from the KfW “Energy-Efficient Construction” program (program no. 153), can profit even more. Combining a Vitovalor PT2 fuel cell heating device with a Vitocharge electricity storage system, together with a contract for VIESSMANN GRÜNGAS (comparable to the usual green electricity contracts), makes it possible to meet the KfW Standard 40 Plus. This gives the builder an attractive repayment bonus of up to 15,000 euros per residential unit to go with the loan.

Easy to install

The two preassembled modules of the compact Vitovalor PT2 fuel cell heating device can be transported and set up separately. They are as easy to install as a compact gas condensing boiler: simply arrange the modules, then hook up the prefabricated joint exhaust gas/vent line, heat flow and return, as well as the drinking water piping.

The Vitovalor PA2 backup solution consists of a compact module that requires no more than a gas connection, flow and return for the separate heating water buffer cylinder, and its own exhaust gas line.

The mains connection for the feed-in of the electricity generated is added to both devices. A meter for the electricity generated and a means of determining the volume of gas – prerequisites for subsidy and energy tax refunds – are already integrated in the devices.
